Righteousness has two aspects, the first is the imputed righteousness that is credited to us as a result of our faith in Christ. We don't earn this, we receive it. The second has to do with living righteously or rightly before the Lord. Though we can never be perfect, the Lord still cares about how we live. Sin entangles us and can enslave us turning isolated actions into habits and habits into bondage. Understanding our imputed righteousness actually helps us to live righteously and keeps us from the snare of sin.
